The Third Night of Navaratri: Awakening our Inner Power with Chandraghanta

On this third sacred night of Navaratri, having learned detachment from Shailaputri and embraced disciplined practice through Brahmacharini, we now embrace Maa Chandraghanta—the divine mother who awakens our dormant spiritual power. Her very form reveals a profound truth: when detachment meets discipline, inner Shakti naturally awakens.

The Symbolism of Chandraghanta

“Chandra” means moon, and “Ghanta” means bell. Adorning her forehead is a crescent moon shaped like a bell, radiating serene yet powerful vibrations. This isn’t mere ornamentation—it represents the awakening of Ajna Chakra, the third eye of wisdom, where human consciousness transcends ordinary perception and touches the divine.

With ten hands wielding various weapons and riding a fierce tiger, Chandraghanta embodies Tejas—divine radiance and spiritual power. Yet her face remains peaceful, teaching us that true strength comes not from aggression but from established inner peace.

From Practice to Power

The spiritual journey follows a natural progression. First, through Shailaputri, we detached from false identifications. Then, through Brahmacharini, we established regular sadhana. Now, Chandraghanta reveals what happens when consistent practice bears fruit—the awakening of our inherent divine power.

The Katha Upanishad describes this beautifully: “Tameva Bhantam Anubhati Sarvam, Tasya Bhasa Sarvam Idam Vibhati”—When that inner light shines, everything else becomes illuminated by its radiance. This is the Chandraghanta state—when the inner moon of consciousness begins to glow with self-effulgent awareness.

The Moon of Consciousness

In Vedantic symbolism, the moon represents Manas (mind) in its purified state. Unlike the scattered, restless mind we usually experience, Chandraghanta’s moon is perfectly still, curved like a smile of divine contentment. This represents Ekagra Chitta—the one-pointed mind that has transcended mental fluctuations.

The Mandukya Upanishad speaks of Turiya—the fourth state of consciousness beyond waking, dreaming, and deep sleep. Chandraghanta’s lunar crown symbolizes this awakened awareness that remains constant through all changing states of experience.

The Divine Bell: Sound of Silence

The bell (ghanta) carries profound significance. In temples, bells are rung to invoke divine presence, but Chandraghanta’s bell is silent yet powerful. This represents Anahata Nada—the unstruck sound, the primordial vibration OM that resonates in the cave of the heart.

The Mandukya Upanishad reveals: “Ayam Atma Brahma”—This Self is Brahman. When we reach the Chandraghanta state, we begin to hear this eternal sound within ourselves—not with ears, but with the very core of our being. This is why she’s called Chandraghanta; she is the bell that awakens us to our true nature.

The Tiger of Transformed Desires

Chandraghanta rides a tiger—not as its victim but as its master. The tiger represents Kama (desire) transformed into spiritual power. In ordinary consciousness, desires ride us, controlling our actions and emotions. But when inner Shakti awakens, we ride desires like Chandraghanta rides her tiger.

This isn’t about suppressing desires but transforming them. The Isha Upanishad teaches: “Tena Tyaktena Bhunjitha Ma Gridha Kasya Svid Dhanam”—Enjoy through renunciation, don’t covet anyone’s wealth. Chandraghanta shows us how to enjoy life fully while remaining established in our true nature.

The Ten Hands of Completeness

Her ten hands represent the complete awakening of our dormant faculties. In Kashmir Shaivism, these ten represent the Dasha Mahavidyas—the ten cosmic powers that operate within every awakened being:

  • Kriya Shakti (Power of Action)
  • Iccha Shakti (Power of Will)
  • Jnana Shakti (Power of Knowledge)
  • And seven others that transform ordinary human functioning into divine expression

When Chandraghanta’s grace descends, we don’t become superhuman—we become truly human, operating from our complete potential rather than our limited self-concept.

The Warrior’s Peace

The peaceful demeanour of Maa chandraghanta

What strikes us about Chandraghanta is this paradox: she’s a fierce warrior goddess, yet her face radiates perfect peace. This teaches us Nishkama Karma—action without attachment to results, as taught in the Bhagavad Gita.

When inner Shakti awakens, we become like her—capable of tremendous action when needed, yet internally established in unshakeable peace. This is Sthitaprajna consciousness—the stable wisdom that remains undisturbed by life’s battles.

Practical Integration

As we honor Chandraghanta tonight, let her awaken our inner power:

  • Silent Sitting: Practice moments of complete stillness, listening for the unstruck sound within
  • Mindful Action: Engage in activities with full presence while maintaining inner detachment
  • Strength from Stillness: Before any challenging task, first establish inner peace
  • Transformed Engagement: Use your desires as fuel for spiritual growth rather than obstacles

The Bridge Forward

If Shailaputri gave us the mountain of stability and Brahmacharini the path of practice, Chandraghanta provides the power to walk that path fearlessly. Tomorrow, we’ll meet Kushmanda, who will show us how this awakened power naturally becomes creative force.

The great sage Abhinavagupta reminds us: “Shaktir Atma Shivasyaiva”—Shakti is the very Self of Shiva. Through Chandraghanta’s grace, we discover that our true power lies not in dominating the world, but in realizing our oneness with the divine consciousness that is the world’s very essence.
