Chapter 5: Secrets in the Shadows

“Now, now, children,” the man who called himself Dr. Verma said smoothly, “there’s no need for dramatics. You’re clearly passionate about animal welfare – perhaps we can work together.”

The two men with him looked less friendly. One was tall and thin with nervous eyes, the other short and broad with permanent scowl lines. They kept glancing around as if expecting trouble.

Tiger found his voice first. “You’re not really from an animal welfare organization, are you?”

The man chuckled. “Perceptive. No, I’m not. But I am trying to protect these animals, in a way. They’ve seen things that could cause… complications for certain people.”

Chaitra stepped slightly forward, her natural charm switching on despite her fear. “What kind of things? Maybe we could help.”

“Oh, you’re good,” the man said approvingly. “Very good. But I’m afraid you children have stumbled into adult business. You see, these particular pets were witnesses to some… activities that their owners weren’t supposed to see.”

From inside the building, they could hear Mitthu the parrot squawking what sounded like fragments of conversation. The words were muffled, but Amily’s sharp ears caught something that made her blood run cold.

“…take the money…” squawk “…nobody will know…” squawk “…burn the evidence…”

Faisal’s street smarts were working overtime. “You’re involved in something illegal, and the pets saw it happen. That’s why you need them gone.”

The man’s friendly mask slipped slightly. “These animals have very good memories, and they have unfortunate timing. A certain parrot, for instance, learned to mimic some conversations that should have remained private. A particular dog saw people burying things that should stay buried. A specific cat witnessed comings and goings at hours when the building should have been empty.”

the Origin of FACT TEAM

The FACT Team: the GENESIS

The tall, nervous man shifted uncomfortably. “Boss, maybe we should just—”

“Quiet, Kumar,” the leader snapped. “These children are smart. They might actually be useful.”

Amily felt a chill of realization. “You’re going to try to make us disappear too, aren’t you?”

“Nothing so dramatic,” the man said. “But you’ll need to stay here while we… relocate to a different area. Can’t have you running to the police with wild stories.”

But the FACT Team had no intention of being anyone’s prisoners. As the three men moved closer, Faisal caught his friends’ eyes and nodded toward a gap between two shipping containers.

“Now!” he shouted.

The four friends bolted into different directions

The four friends bolted in different directions, using a plan they’d never discussed but somehow all understood. Chaos was their friend – the men couldn’t chase all of them at once.

Chaitra dove behind a stack of wooden pallets. Tiger rolled under a parked truck. Amily scrambled up a pile of metal pipes. Faisal seemed to vanish entirely, using his knowledge of tight spaces and hidden paths.

“Find them!” the leader shouted angrily. “They can’t get far!”

But he was wrong. The FACT Team knew how to disappear when they needed to, and more importantly, they knew how to regroup.

The Strange Building that change everything

Twenty minutes later, they met at their predetermined emergency location – the small Hindu temple behind the market, where a kind priest allowed children to shelter from rain or trouble.

“Did everyone make it?” Tiger asked breathlessly.

“We’re all here,” Faisal confirmed, “but we have bigger problems now. Those men aren’t just pet-nappers. They’re involved in something much more serious.”

Amily was practically vibrating with excitement despite their danger. “Did you hear what Mitthu was saying? He’s been repeating conversations about money and burning evidence. Those pets really did witness a crime!”

“We need to tell Inspector Verma immediately,” Chaitra said. “This is too big for us to handle alone.”

But as they prepared to leave the temple, Tiger grabbed his friends’ arms. “Wait. Look who just walked into the police station across the street.”

The FACT Team Members fighting for the pets

Through the temple’s open doorway, they could clearly see the man who’d been calling himself Dr. Verma walking confidently into the Dehradun Police headquarters, nodding familiarly to the officers at the front desk.

“He knows the police,” Faisal said slowly. “He’s comfortable there.”

A terrible possibility was beginning to form in their minds – one that would explain how the criminal had stayed ahead of any investigation, how he’d known exactly which pets to target, and why he’d been so confident about operating in broad daylight.

“What if,” Amily whispered, “he doesn’t just know the police? What if he IS police?”

The FACT Team stared at each other as the full implications hit them. If their enemy was someone inside the police force, then going to Inspector Verma might not be the safe option they’d assumed.

They were truly on their own now, four children against what might be a conspiracy that reached into the very people they’d trusted to protect them.

But they still had the truth, and they still had each other.

And sometimes, that was enough.
